Critique had a department in every issue about a particular city’s character, lifestyle, and design scene. I’d canvass all the firms I could find, and ask them to vote for the top studios (except themselves, of course). I would then interview the winners to get the scoop on their town, read a couple of travel guides, and write an essay about the city. I never actually went anywhere, of course. I just drank up the designers’ kool-aid.
